Main Roads talks Cunningham closure

THE Cunningham Highway will be closed "until at least Friday" according to a spokeswoman from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

The route linking Warwick to the major metropolitan centres closed again on Saturday afternoon, forcing motorists to make last minute detours through Gatton, Toowoomba and Killarney.

There is a high risk of large, burning trees falling onto the road as high fire danger continues to plague the area.

"At the moment it's all just ongoing smoke and smouldering trees," the spokeswoman said.

"The TMR inspectors will assess the area to see what they need to do to make sure the road is safe.

"At the same time, crews are working on strengthening containment lines."

More than 10 large trees have fallen onto the highway over the last few days.

Fire continues to burn on both sides of the highway, according to a spokeswoman from the Department of Main Roads and Transport.

"We have been advised there are trees on fire near the highway," she said.

"The trees are still falling near the top of the Gap at Main Range National Park carpark."

The TMR spokeswoman said the highway will not be open until they're sure of motorist safety.

"This is a developing situation," she said.

"When it is safe for us to access the road, inspections will take place to determine when the road may be reopened."

The main body responsible for the fires around the Gap is the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service which continues to monitor the situation.

Mobile variable message boards have now been moved into place on either side of the highway to alert motorists.
