Major events planned this year at Warwick Horse Trials

EVENTING: Three major events are planned for 2018 at the Warwick Horse Trials complex at Morgan Park.

The March 24-25 event will be the highest ranked event of the year as the program includes national and international classes.

Some riders will use the March event as a chance to qualify horses for major events in the southern states this year.

The March CIC/CNC event will have classes for one- and two-star combinations, as well as low level classes.

There will be CNC events with classes from 60cm to two-star in both June and August.

Dressage for all events will be on the Saturday, showjumping on both Saturday and Sunday and cross country on the Sunday.

The club receives support from many volunteers in the Warwick area on cross country day. Changes are made to jumps between cross country weekends; no two courses are the same.

The Warwick Horse Trials Club was formed in 1996 and work was soon under way to build the cross country course at Morgan Park.

Last year, the club held its 21st anniversary and released a history written by long-serving past president Simon Goddard.

The club started this year with a coaching weekend at Morgan Park in mid January that attracted 30 riders.

Past Warwick winner Brett Cantle was one of the instructors over the three days.

Cantle is a school teacher at Gympie who is also a riding instructor and one of the best eventers in the state.

The January event also included a hunter trial on the Sunday, with cross country and showjumping.

Club vice-president Tracey Sexton said the hunter trial was predominately to consolidate the training from earlier in the coaching weekend.

"A number of riders brought young horses as part of their eventing education,” she said.
