School students get a taste of uni life

MAKING ice-cream with liquid nitrogen was just one of the slices of uni life students got to taste at the University of Southern Queensland's Student Experience Day.

More than 400 year 11 and 12 students from 26 schools in and around Toowoomba took part yesterday, to get an idea of just what campus life could offer them.

Toowoomba State High School's Julie Smith, who counts science as a favourite field of study, took full advantage of the chemistry and biomedical workshops on offer.

"I'm hoping to get into medicine so it's really good they do these days," she said.

"It's been really rewarding."

USQ Vice-Chancellor Jan Thomas said the university held a number of the experience days throughout the year.

"It gives them a slice of what uni life is like, so they can picture themselves at university," she said.

"It gives them a taste of different areas they might be thinking about studying and they then have the chance to get advice on what programs might be suitable for that area.

"It opens up horizons so they can make informed decisions."

Workshops were held across a range of disciplines, including engineering, nursing, archaeology and creative arts.
