Man faces charges of beating his mother and another woman

A CAWARRAL man, who returned home after spending half the night in the bush, had viciously beaten his mother and another woman.

That's the allegation facing Toby Bottomley, 22, after police yesterday charged him with one count of grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm.

The police dog squad arrested Bottomley when he returned to the Cawarral home about 9am yesterday.

Bottomley was believed to be suffering from exposure after his night in the scrub.

He was reportedly drifting in and out of consciousness and was taken to Rockhampton Hospital.

It is alleged he left his mum, 49, with a broken nose and facial injuries, and another woman, 33, with serious head injuries.

A Rockhampton CIB spokesman said yesterday afternoon the woman was still in a coma and in a serious but stable condition.

CIB officer Detective Sergeant Nick Williams said the man had left the house in the early hours yesterday morning only to return about 3am, when he allegedly got into a struggle with the woman and his mother.

Det Sgt Williams said a shovel was used in the struggle but the man didn't use it to strike the women during the alleged physical assaults.

When he returned to the house about 9am, little did he know police officers and a dog squad were sitting in bush surrounding the house.

Doctors later cleared the man of any medical issues before transporting him to the Rockhampton watch house for processing.

He will appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court today.
