Man charged over Australia Day gas explosion

A CAIRNS man has faced a Brisbane court charged with setting off a huge gas explosion on Australia Day.

Craig David Pierce, 39,  of Kewarra Beach, allegedly ignited gas from a 9kg LPG bottle inside the Miara Cl residence, causing more than $100,000 of damage and injuring both himself and his 65-year-old mother.

His injuries were so severe he has spent more than a month in the Royal Brisbane Hospital receiving treatment to burns which affected about 40 per cent of his body.

He was released from hospital yesterday but was immediately taken into custody by detectives from the Valley Criminal Investigation Branch, who had been co-ordinating with Far North based officers.

He faced Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday charged with wilful damage by explosion and acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.
