Son witnessed dad's violent death

The violent death of a man in Springfield Lakes was reportedly witnessed by his son.

Witnesses told The Courier-Mail about how they placed sheets under the dying man, who it is believed was hit with bats during an altercation that followed a car chase through suburban streets last night.

A silver sedan driven by a 49-year-old man was allegedly following a white ute driven by two 19-year-old males along The Promenade about 10pm on Saturday

Police say when the cars stopped the two younger men allegedly threatened the older man before striking him, causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

The 49-year-old died at the scene a short time later.

The two men were allegedly seen leaving the scene in the white ute.

Police arrested them just before midnight at a residence in Atlantic St.

It is believed that all three men were known to one another.

Mark Windler and Chloe Namour who live on The Promenade rushed to help the dying man after hearing what they thought was a "car accident".

"It sounded like a car accident...the ute got stuck in the fence across the road," Mr Windler said.

Ms Namour, said the dead man's son and a friend were also in the silver sedan and witnessed the deadly incident unfold.

"With the gentlemen that passed away, there was his son and a friend in the car - the poor son had to be a witness," Ms Namour said.

"There were a lot of altercations out the front - yelling and hits thrown...we saw the aftermath. It's not something I'd like to see again.

"I'm not sure what happened leading up to it, there was a lot of yelling and they've come and met in the street and the two guys have come with bats and you can't fight a bat with nothing...it's sad we couldn't help him any further."

Another resident said he heard a "big commotion", describing the incident as a "pretty aggressive situation".

"I heard someone say, 'the next one's going to be a f**king bullet!'," he said.

"It was quite evident there was some kind of relationship between them...it was very aggressive with lots of curse words."

Earlier another local described the scene as "horrible".

"We heard all the sirens going off...they blocked it off about 10pm and from then on it was just crazy, absolutely crazy - it's horrible," she said.

"It's pretty scary to know they lived in the area and had a firearm.

"It's such a quiet area, I never would have expected this."

Police are urging anyone who was in the Springfield Lakes area between 10pm and midnight, or who may have dash cam or CCTV vision of the incident to contact them.
