Explosion that killed a Bowen man to be investigated

POLICE have not ruled an explosion that killed a Bowen man and left two police officers injured as suspicious.

The incident happened about 8.20pm on Saturday, where police attended the William St address to conduct a welfare check on the 54-year-old resident.

Inspector Ian Haughton confirmed that officers detected an "odour of gas" while approaching the complex.

"They called the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service for assistance and made the decision to enter the unit to ensure the safety of the resident," he said.

"This is just another example of the excellent work completed by first response police on a daily basis.

"Unfortunately, two officers were injured and someone lost their life; however those officers were selfless in their actions and their focus was to make sure they could do the best they could for someone else's welfare."

The female officer, who was transferred to Townsville Hospital for assessment, sustained a number of second degree burns to her face and chest, Inspector Haughton said.

The male officer suffered burns to his arm and facial hair.

"The circumstances of the explosion and how it occurred are all subject to investigation and that will be overviewed to the ethical standards," he said.
