Man kicked, stomped on and spat on before dying

A JURY has been told of the moments when a man who was killed in a Gatton pub fight was kicked and stomped on as he lay unconscious on the floor.

Christopher James Earl, 29, has pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court to murdering Laurence Shane Black, 46, at the Imperial Hotel on October 28, 2011.

Patron Renee Arndt told the court of the moment she saw Earl punch Mr Black with a barrage of punches to his head and watching his lifeless body fall to the floor.

"Once the man fell to the floor the attacker (Earl) started kicking and stomping on his head," she said.

"Once he finished kicking and stomping him he turned around and spat on him before walking out the door."

Mr Black's distraught family were in court to hear bartender Martina Sellars tell the jury what she witnessed the night of the incident.

"I saw a man against the wall (Black) being attacked in a vicious manner," she said.

"The man was trying to defend himself, but he did not throw any punches.

"The punches were extremely fast and were very hard.

"The man slumped down on his knees and the attacker then punched him several times to the head before he collapsed on the floor."

Student Tammy Blackwell told the court she was at the bar with friends when she saw an altercation to the right of her.

Earl's barrister Robert East tried to confuse Ms Blackwell over her statement to police where she said she saw someone kicking a person on the ground.

"I know what I saw and he certainly was not kicking at nothing," she said.

Earlier in the trail Crown Prosecutor Brendan Campbell told the jury Mr Black died as a result of his two main arteries to his brain being severed.

An autopsy revealed Mr Black had sustained more than 25 blunt force traumas to his body including bruising on his arms consistent with a person attempting to defend themselves.

The trial before Justice Peter Applegarth continues.
