Man on trial over death of young rugby league player

A TRIAL over the death of a promising rugby league player at Bribie Island will begin on Monday.

Wally James Hung, 21, is accused of manslaughter after one punch knocked out Bribie Island Warrigals' star five-eighth and Queensland Rugby League player Todd Parnell, 23.

Mr Parnell and Hung had been at the Warrigals' clubhouse in Bongaree after a home game to celebrate two combined 21st birthdays in July 2009.

Mr Parnell's family switched off life support the next day.

Hung has maintained he is not guilty of the offence and plans to defend the charge.

The trial is listed for eight days.
