Man whacked with crutch as drunken revellers punch on

A MAN on crutches with a moon boot on one leg early this morning belted someone with a crutch before jumping into a canal to escape police.

Police said they were called to Brisbane Road at Mooloolaba just before 1am to reports of an assault and were told a man had hit another man over the head with his crutch before trying to escape via the canal despite his injured legs.

Officers at the scene managed to get the man out of the canal and brought him in to assist with inquiries. However, no official complaint was made and no charges pressed.

Police said the incident was one of several minor drunken assaults in the area early this morning by New Year's Eve revellers.
