Mango farmer turns racing driver and ends up winner
MOTORSPORT: A mango farmer from Mareeba has travelled to Warwick to enjoy a winning weekend with the AgTrack Alpine Motor Sports team at Morgan Park Raceway.
John Magro will travel from Mareeba in North Queensland for all six rounds of the Australian Formula 3 Premier Series.
He won round 1 at Morgan Park this weekend and has one round at Queensland Raceway and four interstate rounds to go.
Magro drove a Formula 3 car in 2011-2013 before concentrating on Australian GT Championships in an Audi R8 for the past three years.
Now back in Formula 3, Magro paid tribute to the work of his pit crew of four.
"Richard Elliott engineers the car and does all the settings,” Magro said.
"This is a real driver's class with the massive amount of aerodynamics downforce resulted in higher cornering speeds than in any other class.”
Magro estimates the car reached 220kmh at Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend.
"The track has really improved, the meeting was well run, especially for a volunteer group,” he said.
Magro describes himself as a semi professional driver.
"The mango farm is my livelihood and is going well, then I can go race cars, I can't ask much more than that,” he said.
There were more than 100 drivers in action at the first CAMS state championship round since the re-surfacing of the 3km main track at the raceway.
