Mardi Gras takes over main street

PALMERIN Street will burst to life tonight as an old Warwick tradition returns home.

This year's Mardi Gras celebration will revert from its previous location at Leslie Park, with rides, stalls and entertainment set to spill throughout the street.

Warwick businessman Gary Kelly has been very vocal in calling for the event to return to the main street and said he was pleased Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott had made it happen.

"Tracy Vellacott is the best thing that has ever happened to Warwick Tourism and Events," he said.

"Unlike her predecessor, she looks at it from a local point of view and has taken it back to the way Warwick people remember it. The way we've always remembered it."

Mrs Vellacott said her "local eyes" had helped her see the vision of the local people a little easier and said a conscious decision was made to support local eateries.

"It's part of the tradition - we're a pretty conservative community and we love tradition," she said.
