Mardi Gras celebrates community
IN JUST a few short weeks the streets of Warwick will fill with colour, song, dance and festive cheer with the countdown on until the Rose and Rodeo Festival Mardi Gras.
Warwick Events and Tourism CEO, Tracy Vellacott said she saw Mardi Gras as a chance to enjoy a night out with family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere.
"One of the things I love about Mardi gras is that it's an opportunity to show-off our community to visitors, as well as reconnect with our neighbours and community," Mrs Vellacott said.
"Through adversity like the January floods we've shown a willingness to stand up and be counted as members of a strong community and we've embraced celebration of our successes and milestones such as Warwick's 150th birthday. Mardi Gras is an opportunity to wander and appreciate our beautiful CBD, the Horticultural Society's floral window displays and of course some toe-tappin' country music."
Mrs Vellcott said she hoped people would bring along their fold-out seats and get comfy for the variety of entertainment provided in front of Town Hall.
"The Bellydance Hipstars and the Killarney School of Dance will perform along with the Thistle Pipe Band, before the Walmsley Brothers and Blue Rain take to the stage for some hot country tunes," she said.
"There will also be a chance to meet rodeo royalty and to back a winner in the Graham Buchner Celebrity Horse Race."
This year the Mardi Gras will move back to the centre of Warwick CBD, with the road closed off to traffic at Grafton St and half way down the Leslie Park block. Rides will take up residence at the Leslie Park end of Fitzroy St.
The Mardi Gras will kick off at 6pm on Friday October 28.
