Mark Steketee takes Senior Sports Star of the Year Award

THERE was no rest for Australian under-19 paceman Mark Steketee after his win in the Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Year Award on Saturday night at Kings at the Warwick RSL.

Steketee won the award after representing Queensland at under-19 cricket  level last year and taking 16 wickets in the national championships.

He opened the bowling for Australia in the ICC World Cup and took 3-35 off 10 overs in a semi-final victory against South Africa.

In the final, India beat Australia but the result was a lot less convincing for the players from the sub-continent than the recent Test victories in the first two Tests in India.

Yesterday, Steketee played for his Warwick club team Maryvale in the Warwick cricket semi final. He opened the batting for Maryvale and hit 11 off the first over before being dismissed for 24 as his side scored 2-122 to beat the RSL Diggers score of 114.

Warwick hockey player Steve Farrell won the Warwick RSL Club "Club Person of the Year" award.

He won the award for his grand-final appearance for Harlequins in Warwick A-grade hockey, a club best and fairest award, his premiership success with the Warwick veterans and contributions off the field.

While Farrell won his monthly award for  making the Australian over 50s hockey team, the RSL club person award is determined by performances for clubs in the Warwick area and work off the field.

A crowd of 220 attended the dinner at which Olympic medallist Lee Bodimeade was one of the speakers and poet/entertainer Marco Gliori the guest presenter.

Monthly sports star senior and junior (under 18) award nominations close with Daily News sports reporter Gerard Walsh at gerardw@warwickdailynews.com.au on the fifth of each month for the previous month.
