Markets added reason to visit Glengallan Homestead

VISITOR numbers at Glengallan Homestead are well up and board chair Donna Fraser couldn't be happier.

Yesterday, she was one of many volunteers working at the quarterly markets at the homestead.

"We have experienced a real upsurge in tourism this year," Mrs Fraser said.

"More people are spending money. There are more on the roads out and about.

"Our visitor numbers are well up."

Every community organisation needs volunteers and Brisbane couple Burt and Jill Beaumont are two such volunteers at Glengallan Homestead.

They collect admission fees at the door.

Mr Beaumont said he drove past Glengallan Homestead in the 1990s and hoped someone would bring it back to its former glory.

"You couldn't even stand on the veranda when the restoration started," he said.

Leanne Olivotto and Julie Payne dressed up in period costume to show visitors through the homestead.

Julie Payne said people liked the atmosphere of the homestead.

"The most frequently asked question is about ghosts and I tell them I haven't seen one yet and am not expecting to," she said.

Mrs Olivotto said the steady stream of visitors was surprising given the rain.

"People like the history of the homestead," Mrs Olivotto said.

Stalls were set up on the veranda and the open area between the cafe and homestead.
