Roadworker 'run over' by truck at Marlborough

UPDATE 8.45AM: POLICE are investigating after a crash claimed the life of a woman at Marlborough yesterday afternoon. A prime mover travelling south on the Bruce Highway collided with a woman about 4.25pm, about 500 metres south of the Perkins Rd turnoff.

The woman, who is believed to be a road worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway remained closed to traffic in both directions until after midnight, with the Forensic Crash Unit conducting investigations.

Marlborough BP Service Station co-manager Steve Balgowan said the road closure had left hundreds of motorists stranded last night.

"We would have more than 100 people in our service station and I know the Caltex is also completely filled," he said.

"There isn't any option for these people at this stage, so we're just trying to do our best to help out while they work out what they are going to do."

Anyone with information that could assist with this matter should phone Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
