Maroons bask in glory at weekend
WARWICK player Stephanie Thorsby won the best player award as Queensland beat New South Wales 19-8 in the women’s final in the Barastoc Interstate Series polocrosse at Morgan Park yesterday.
Queensland was unbeaten throughout the three days of competition.
In the interstate men’s competition, Southern Downs pair Stuart Shepherd and Mick Dillon were part of the Queensland team, which beat New South Wales 26-15 in the final.
Shepherd plays for the Warwick club and Dillon, who lives at Yangan, for the Wandoan club.
Queensland won each of the interstate series except the juniors.
Warwick player Katie Barr was the best female player in the under-21 mixed interstate competition.
In the masters, Bill Kerr (Cunningham club) was the best player in the interstate series.
A New Zealand development team of four up-and-coming players and two Test regulars played in the men’s competition.
The Test pair were Dean Gower and Shane Hill who both played in Warwick in the 2007 World Cup.
In the Shell Cup yesterday, Tansey won 21-11 against Quirindi in the men’s final. Quirindi player Simon Smith was the best.
Sale club from Victoria scored a goal in extra time to beat Warwick 17-16 in the mixed club final.
Trish Shepherd was best women’s player.
A grade – Tambo, best player Aimee McGuire (Tambo).
B grade – Tansey 2, Ashley Wheeler (Toowoomba).
C grade – Gold Coast 2, Bree Fields (Cubaroo).
D grade – Roma, Sarah Ots (Bauhinia).
E grade – Cunningham 2 (Tom Campbell (Cunningham).
B grade junior – Tansey 1, Sam Cobon (Cunningham).
C grade junior – Clifton 1, Grace Young (Clifton).
