Maryvale wins easily in annual game
CRICKET: A compulsory retirement at 40 has enabled Maryvale to come up with a 1-256 scoreline to beat Cooper's XI in the Cooper Bourke Cup game at Maryvale.
There was no chance of rain washing out play at the weekend and Cooper's XI won the toss and batted to score 7-252.
Captain Mark Gaskell has played Sheffield Shield for Queensland and was out for 16 in the Cooper's XI innings, caught by Jason Steketee off the bowling of Paul Bourke.
Once a team is dismissed, the retired batsmen have the chance to return to the wicket and Jeff Paulsen led the way with 63 not out.
He was supported by Josh Ibell with an unbeaten 52 and Brisbane A-grade keeper batsman David Lyons, who scored 41.
Mitch Darton took two wickets with the ball for Maryvale to finish with 2-27 off seven overs.
Dave Walker finished with 1-23 off six overs in the 50-overs a side match.
Maryvale only lost one wicket to the bowlers and fielders, Steketee was run out for 19.
Pat Bourke, 40, Jordon Siebenhausen 44, Michael Bourke, 42, and Paul Bourke, 40, all retired.
When the winning runs were scored, Neil Vickers was unbeaten on 31 and Kieran Bourke on 17 in the 37th over.
Paulsen was man of the match.
The game was the fifth for the Cooper Bourke Cup and the third win by home side Maryvale.
Cooper's XI won the inaugural game which wicketkeeper of the century Ian Healy and past Australian coach John Buchanan were part of.
Buchanan in fact tore a hamstring at Maryvale, the same type of injury which has floored Queensland fullback Billy Slater from last night's footy.
Cooper's XI won both the first and third annual games with Maryvale up 3-2 on head-to-head after wins in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
The Maryvale ground next to the school is used for each game as well as the annual Warwick Australia Day Cricket Carnival.
The bowling at Maryvale in the carnival this year was all from one end after vandals had burnt a hole in the synthetic closer to the southern end stumps.
Many members of the winning Maryvale team from this year's Warwick A-grade competition played over the weekend.
