Massie Whisper in for Allman Park start
RACING: Massie trainer Leo Roche is quietly confident three-year-old filly Massie Whisper will race well in the 800m maiden in the Olsens Produce/Freestone Feedlot Boxing Day Races at Allman Park today.
The filly is owned by Dave and Bev West and leased by Roche and his wife Joanne.
Massie Whisper is by Lyndhurst stud sire Sequalo out of the mare Scrawl by Zabeel.
Her first start was a fourth at Texas and on Saturday the filly was 10th in a 1000m race at Clifford Park in Toowoomba.
Roche wasn't too disappointed with 10th as Massie Whisper was in a tough field and was in the lead bunch for the first 400m before finishing 10 lengths behind the winner who set a class record.
"It was a pretty fair effort by the filly in her second run,” he said.
"Every local trainer wants to race on Boxing Day. There are six local trainers with horses in the same race as Massie Whisper.
"After starting the filly on Saturday, I wouldn't normally back up on the Tuesday except the race meeting is in Warwick.
"I think this is a race which will suit Massie Whisper but I won't race her unless she is fully recovered from her run on Saturday.”
Roche runs racehorses on his property Joleka at Massie and also breeds yearlings.
He takes Massie Whisper to Allman Park to train four times a week where she is ridden by track rider Naomi Hemmings.
Roche is starting to prepare four yearlings for the QTIS Magic Millions Sale in March.
"We have been breeding racehorses for 20 years,” he said.
Bev West said the filly had the stable name Whiskey.
"We couldn't get our original request to name the filly and ended up with Massie Whisper,” she said.
When asked why racing, her husband Dave said he sometimes asked himself the same question.
"I just like all sports,” he said.
Dave West said they bought Scrawl, the mother of Massie Whisper, five years ago.
"I have high hopes for a 14-month-old filly by Scrawl out of Black Caviar's full brother Moshe which we will probably race ourselves,” he said.
One year the Wests transported six mares to Victoria and five were joined to Moshe and one to Squamosa.
The first race on the program today at Allman Park is at 1.43pm and the last of six at 4.57pm.
The last is the feature race, the Steele's Bakery and Cafe Magic Millions Country Cup Qualifier, a 1200m open race. As it is a TAB meeting, each race will be televised.
