A masterpiece begins in the raw

PETER Kennedy's art does not come in neat little packages.

He will tell you that they are a form of expression and, maybe, a little rough around the edges.

His latest piece - a clay creation called Essentially Earth - won the 3D category in the Sunshine Coast Regional Council's Tertiary Prize Competition recently at the Cooroy Butter Factory.

Peter, 58, of Doonan, said his statue of a man sitting on a box and contemplating, plus the properties of the clay itself, allowed the trueness of the artwork to be on display.

"It allows the rawness of the art to come through," he said.

"I guess you could say it's a form of expressionism."

Peter is in his final weeks of his two-year diploma course at the Sunshine Coast TAFE.

The recent move back into the classroom is a big change from his previous career as a designer for his own organic clothing line.

Peter founded Elliot Kennedy clothing company in 1990, and his work with raw materials in the clothing industry he said was close to his new career direction.

"I guess the two are quite similar, given that they are both working with different textures and textural effects," he said.

His time working as the company director of design allowed him to explore a variety of media.

"I loved it," he said.

"It was a fantastic experience.

"We were involved in the whole process - from sourcing organic cotton directly from the grower, to using our own knitting machines to knit the cotton, batch dyeing the fabric, designing the clothes with attention to detail and making them with in-house and contracted sewing machinists."

Peter, along with his fellow students at Sunshine Coast TAFE, will feature in the graduation exhibition, Inspirae - a Latin word which means to be enthused - from November 25 to 30.
