Masterpiece year for arts

WITH a full program of innovative art exhibitions in 2015, the Warwick Art Gallery team is looking to capitalise on a massive growth in visitor numbers.

Following on from a busy 2014, gallery director Karina Devine described this year as a 'very good year' for the gallery.

"We're looking at a particularly great program this year," she said.

"As soon as we started to put it together we thought wow this is going to be a great program."

The Warwick Art Gallery saw a massive growth in visitor numbers in 2014, off the back of popular exhibitions including the quirky Knitchen project from Jumpers and Jazz.

Ms Devine said the volume of people was beyond her team's wildest imaginations.

"We hope we just keep being able to deliver interesting ideas into the future," she said.

"We want to be different and challenging."

On January 15 the first major exhibit of the year opens, titled Three Foot Six, The Sunlander.

Inspired by Queensland's unique rail culture, this exhibit comprises the works of prominent Queensland artists, photographer Glen O'Malley and painter Ian Smith.

"Anyone interested in trains or train travel in Queensland will love it," Ms Devine said.

"I want to urge everyone to come to the artists' talk here at the gallery on Thursday January 29 at 10.30am."

The exhibition will be on display until February 22, with the next exhibition by local artist Dennis Hope opening on February 26.

The gallery will be going high-tech in May with the exciting Australian Chamber Orchestra touring exhibition coming to town.

Ms Devine said the exhibition will allow visitors to come in and conduct a virtual orchestra.

"I was just so pleased when the committee said let's go for this," she said.

"It's quite expensive and has an intricate technological setup - it will be great in this venue."

Local artists will also be able to add their touch to the gallery this year in the Southern Downs Regional Artists Exhibition.

Held every second year, the exhibition encourages local artists to contribute their works for a shot at a record amount of prize money.

Ms Devine said the committee decided to double the prize money offered this year to attract more artists to the exhibition.

"Sections include painting, 2D works, sculpture and contemporary textiles," she said.

"Each section winner gets $1000 with thanks to the Warwick Credit Union, Rose City Shoppingworld and Helen Harm Real Estate."
