Matildas get off to losing start in Portugal

FOOTBALL: Australia's women's team has got off to a losing start in the Algarve Cup in Portugal.

The Matildas were low par and lost 1-0 to Olympic silver medallist Sweden in the group C match at Albufeira.

Alen Stajcic's team did have the better of the first half but missed a number of opportunities to take the lead.

Kyah Simon missed the best of those, firing over the bar after Perth Glory star Sam Kerr's great work has set up the Sydney FC striker.

The Swedes regrouped after the break and created some great chances of their own before taking the lead on the hour mark.

Captain Lotta Shelin broke dow the right and beat Elise Kellond-Knight to fire in the top corner from a tight angle.

The Swedes hit the post 10 minutes later before the Matildas had a late chance to equalise.

Hedvig Lindahl was on hand to keep out Kerr's chip and the Swedes held on.

Australia faces the Netherlands in its next match on Saturday morning (AEST) before lining up against China three days later.
