Matt ready for a trip to New Zealand with Queensland hockey
HOCKEY: Matt Eastwell only had to wait a fortnight for the phone call he wanted – selection in the Queensland open schoolboys team for a tour to New Zealand later this year.
He was chosen as a shadow after last month’s state championships but is now in the team.
“I was hoping I would get the chance to play for Queensland, it was one of my ambitions and now it is going to happen,” he said.
“It should be a good experience to play against strong teams in New Zealand and travel around the country.
“I played in the forwards in the state championships so hope to be up front on tour.”
It will be his first overseas trip and he plans to do extra fitness and skill work in the lead-up to the tour.
“A few people have offered to help with some extra training,” he said.
He will play for Wyverns against Harlequins in Warwick club hockey on Saturday.
His selection for Queensland was after his third state championships at secondary level. He played for Darling Downs in two state championships at primary level.
He is a year 12 student at Assumption and works part-time at Bell’s Butchery.
He will leave for New Zealand on September 26 and will play eight games during the 13-day tour.
