Matthew Carey to strike in finals

DARLING Downs has qualified for today’s final of the Queensland Secondary Schools 19 years and under Football Championships at Stanthorpe.

Warwick State High School left striker Matthew Carey is the only Southern Downs player in the Darling Downs team. The rest of the team is from Toowoomba.

Yesterday, Darling Downs beat Metropolitan North 4-0 before beating Metropolitan East 2-0 in the 2.30pm game.

In earlier carnival games, Darling Downs recorded victories against Capricornia 1-0 and South Coast 2-0.

Darling Downs has recovered well with four wins after starting the carnival with a 2-1 loss to Northern on Saturday.

Carey said it was exciting to make a final with a Darling Downs team for the first time.

“We are likely to play Northern and can turn the tables on them after a narrow loss on day one after we led 1-0,” Carey said.
