Matt's team going for Bathurst 12 Hour Race win
MOTOR RACING: McElrea Racing owner Andy McElrea is going for gold with Matt Campbell in his team in Sunday's Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour race.
Campbell is in the Competition Motorsports Ice Break Porsche GT3R with co-drivers David Calvert-Jones, Patrick Long and Marc Lieb.
Lieb and Long are currently Porsche works drivers, Lieb in Germany and Long in America. The fourth member of the team is car owner David Calvert-Jones, an American- based Aussie.
Such is the seriousness the McElrea Racing prepared team is approaching Sunday's 12-hour race, the Porsche they will be driving has been transported from America.
McElrea said Sunday's event was one of the most prestigious endurance races in the world.
"It is for GT3 race cars like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, BMW, Audi and Aston Martin,” he said.
"We are here to win, Matt had us in second position last year in a McLaren before another driver crashed out.”
It will be the last race for Campbell before he heads to Europe to start preparing for the eight weekends of Porsche Mobil 1 Supercar Racing this year.
Campbell won the Porsche Carrera Cup series last year to become the first driver from McElrea Racing to win the individual series. They also won the teams title.
The race starts at 4.45am (AEST) Sunday. All four team members must take a turn at the wheel and none can be in the car for more than four hours.
There is practice on Friday, practice and qualifying on Saturday in the run-up to the race.
The top-10 shootout is at 2.40pm (AEST) Saturday and the odds are on his form from last year, Campbell is a strong chance to make the shootout.
