May the 4th be with you
TODAY is Star Wars Day and Tony Davidson is one man who treats it as reverently as any of the national holidays, except he has to go to work.
Mr Davidson, a lifelong fan and collector, said he didn’t have many of the figurines as a kid.
“I don’t think the family could afford them then, but I’ve well and truly made up for it now,” he said.
“I’ve got a heap of the collectors issue figurines as well as novels and the visual encyclopaedias.
“I even picked up the original Return of the Jedi graphic novel in a comic shop for $2, I couldn’t believe it.
“My wife Kirra bought me a light sabre for Christmas. It’s not a real one unfortunately but it does light up.”
Star Wars aside, Mr Davidson is a comic book fanatic, with about five bookcases filled with a range of comics and graphic novels.
“This is just the start, there are about nine boxes full in the shed as well,” he said. “I’m a cartoonist so they’re a great source of ideas and inspiration for me.
“I’ve got a pull list at Kaboom Comics in Toowoomba, which is basically a running subscription.
“The guys at Kaboom Comics in Toowoomba put my subscription list aside for me and I collect them on my trips up there every couple of weeks.
“A few of my favourites titles are I Hate Fairyland, Doctor Strange and Red Wolf, The Amazing Spiderman and Guardians of the Galaxy.
“I also love the graphic novels, which range from child-friendly to definitely not for children, like The Walking Dead and Fables.”
In 2014 Mr Davidson found something interesting online and signed up.
“It was an online course out of the United States called Social Issues through Comic Books.
“It went for six months and each month I studied a new social issue such as racism, drugs and addiction or immigration.
“I just wanted to try something different and learn something at the same time, it’s a proper course but they use comics as the teaching aid instead of textbooks.
“It’s quite a trend in the States of late.”
Mr Davidson said he draws a comic every morning.
“I usually do a quick sketch of something that’s on my mind, for example if someone famous has died I’ll do a tribute piece.
“I’ve done David Bowie and Prince this year.
“Once or twice a week I’ll do something a lot larger and more detailed.
“I have my own comic strip as well, which comes out every Friday. It’s called Lil’ Geeks and you can find it on the Lil’ Geeks Facebook page.
“I’ve been drawing for years. I love it and I’ll keep doing it, trying to gain a little more exposure.
“I use social media a lot, to share my work and that of other artists.”
As for Star Wars Day today Mr Davidson will be back at work at Akooramak, where he’s been for 21 years.
“I’m the gardener and maintenance man. I love it. the oldies are great to have a yarn with,” he said.
“Basically, if it’s broken, I fix it and if it’s heavy, I lift it.
“I’ll definitely post a Star Wars tribute sketch in the morning and probably annoy the force out of everyone all day posting and sharing Star Wars stuff.”
“May the fourth be with you.”
