Mayor eager for Anzac Day

ANZAC DAY ceremonies will be held around the region on Saturday April 25 and Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Cr Peter Blundell is looking forward to participating in these special events.

This year marks a significant milestone in Australian history with the Centenary of Anzac and local services on the Southern Downs will acknowledge the enormous impact the Anzac landing has had on the nation.

Cr Blundell said the RSL and the Veteran Services & Advocacy Services Australia have organised a number of ceremonies across the region to allow all community members freedom to attend a service at their convenience.

"As most residents would know the Warwick services include a Dawn Service, ceremonies at the War Graves Cemetery and Eden Gardens Memorial Park and an 11am service at the Cenotaph in Leslie Park.

"A similar program of Anzac Day services has been arranged for the Stanthorpe community, as well as services in many of the smaller communities within the Southern Downs Region including Killarney, Tannymorel, Allora, Leyburn and Wallangarra.

"These are solemn occasions and I'm pleased to honour the strong feeling of mateship of our diggers and that Australians are grateful for the free and democratic society they live in."

"I'm pleased our local communities take time to participate and to encourage children to understand and appreciate the Anzac legend and spirit," he said.

As well as the Stanthorpe Anzac Day dawn service and Warwick Anzac Day commemoration service, Cr Blundell will attend the Applethorpe ANZAC service on April 23 and the Glen Aplin ANZAC service on April 24.
