McDaniel carries on with career away from basketball

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: Former Warwick basketballer Michael McDaniel is following a sports dream that has now taken him to mixed martial arts in Australia and overseas.

He recently competed in the Ozzie Tough Man Tournament at Carrara on the Gold Coast which attracted a crowd of 10,000.

There was $20,000 on offer to the winner and $5000 for runner-up for both the under 80kg and over 80kg divisions.

McDaniel won his first fight and was happy with his efforts in his second when he over extended his elbow during the fight and was technically counted out.

"The judges said I was winning when I was injured,” he said.

"I needed to win four fights in my age group in the tournament at the Gold Coast to win the $20,000.”

He is now in negotiations for his next fights.

After trialling for an NBA basketball team in the United States, McDaniel moved to Australia to play basketball.

He now lives in Ipswich but spent many years in Warwick and has played a lot of basketball for the Warwick Wildcats, Toowoomba Mountaineers and Ipswich Force.
