McGrady joins Legends line-up
ROTHMANS Medal winner Ewan McGrady will be one of three players with an Eastern Suburbs connection playing for the Warwick rugby league team against the St George Illawarra Dragons in the Black Toyota Legends game at Father Ranger Oval on Saturday August 20.
McGrady won the Rothmans Medal in 1991 for best and fairest in the national competition and went down in rugby league folklore when he was rushed to the presentation ceremony when it become apparent he was the likely winner.
He played for the Bulldogs at the time and now lives at Goondiwindi.
McGrady is one of three players with NRL experience lining up for the Warwick team. The others are former Wattles, Broncos and international prop Shane Webcke and Allora-born Grant Rix, who started on the Southern Downs before playing for Valleys in Brisbane and then the Broncos.
While they won’t be playing in the game, two of the major drawcards during the Dragons visit will be former Dragons players Graeme Langlands and Johnny Raper, two of the seven Australian Rugby League Immortals.
The major addition to the named Dragons Legends team is former Brisbane, New South Wales and Australian centre Chris Johns.
Johns, Shaun Timmins, Noel Goldthorpe, David Barnhill, Wayne Bartrim and Kevin Campion are State of Origin players in the Dragons Legends, along with dual league and union international Scott Gourley.
The Warwick side includes players representing teams which were in the Warwick and District St George Cup competition until 1986, when the Warwick Cowboys and Stanthorpe joined the Toowoomba competition.
The visit will raise funds for senior and junior rugby league clubs hit by the Christmas floods and is also supported by the Men of League.
Warwick and Valleys will meet in TRL games from 1pm on August 20 with the Legends game at 5.15pm.
