The Junka comes to Warwick to race in VW Nationals
DRAG RACING: Volkswagen drag racing enthusiasts from around Australia will be proudly showing off their labours of love through the main streets of Warwick today.
The VW Nationals drag racing event held today and tomorrow at the Warwick Dragway will begin with a street parade and display in Leslie Park, giving Warwick residents the chance to see a huge variety of racing and daily-drive VWs from all sizes and motor classes.
Brad Young will be one of the drivers competing this weekend in his custom-made Beetle, known as The Junka.
Young and The Junka drove up from Sydney and arrived in Warwick yesterday to start setting up for the weekend event.
"I've come almost every year since the event began," Young said.
"I love coming to Warwick, it's a great place to race and the volunteers do an amazing job of setting up the event.
"We get some of our best times on the track here. I'd come here over an event in Sydney any day."
Young said his passion for Volkswagen cars began when he first got given a VW toy as a kid.
His love for the brand only grew when at 15, Young bought his first car and of course, it had to be a Volkswagen.
Now Young competes in drag racing with The Junka, a car he put together with leftover parts he collected from customers at his West Side Mufflers shop in Sydney.
"I started out with all genuine VW parts but the cost was so high I had to introduce some after-market parts as well," Young said.
"It's got a new engine and the power-to-weight ratio gives The Junka an edge."
The Junka will face some stiff competition when Young takes to the track in the All Motor Class that includes V8s, rotary engines and turbo-charged engines.
This will be the tenth anniversary of the VW event and with more than 110 entrants it's shaping up to be the biggest yet.
The street parade begins at 9.30am today at Leslie Park and qualifying starts at the Warwick Dragway from 1pm.
Entry costs $10 a day.
