Melbourne series’ Real star power

CRISTIANO Ronaldo is on target to break Lionel Messi's record of 50 goals in a season after his double in Real Madrid's 4-0 win over Eibar gave him 20 goals in 11 La Liga games this .

And Australian sports fans may have the chance to see the Portuguese superstar up close and personal, with confirmation that Real Madrid will take part in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne next July.

As well as Ronaldo, the Spanish giant boasts some of the biggest names in the game including Colombia's World Cup hero James Rodriguez, Welsh international Gareth Bale and Spanish internationals Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.

Two other high-profile teams are expected to be part of the competition, with English Premier League champions Manchester City and Italian club Inter Milan believed to be in the final stages of negotiations.

Victorian Sports Minister Damian Drum said he expected the round robin series, to be played at the MCG on July 18, 21 and 24, would generate up to $50 million for the economy.

July will be a big month for the game with the annual A-League All Stars clash to be staged in Sydney, possibly against EPL club Arsenal, and Liverpool in line to play against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
