Soldiers remembered in March of the Dungarees anniversary
SOUTHERN Downs residents are invited to contribute to regional library commemorative displays for the 100 year anniversary of the March of the Dungarees.
The 1915 march started in Warwick to recruit men to serve in the First World War, with 28 local men enlisting.
Principal librarian Samantha Shelbourn said people could make contributions to the walls displayed at Warwick, Stanthorpe and Allora libraries until December 10.
"Here in Warwick we've received donations from Pringle Cottage museum including small biographies and photos of the march taken from the top of the town hall by Harold Isaac Spreadborough, son of the town clerk," Mrs Shelbourn said.
"We also have some photos from the State Library database of their arrival in Brisbane, going through Queen St to a reception in Albert Square, and a transcribed article from the Warwick Argus.
Mrs Shelbourn said each wall will be moved to Warwick Town Hall for a demonstration of support event on December 11 from 5.30pm.
"The events will be re-enacted before moving into the Town Hall for a formal ceremony followed by an evening of music and poetry," she said.
"I'm sure there are still lots of family of the soldiers who marched living in the area and it's nice to commemorate them."
Tickets to the event are free but seating is limited.
Anyone missing out is invited to bring chairs and watch the program live-streamed to screens outside the Town Hall.
