Men's president celebrated anniversary with a win

BOWLS: Patron and patroness Noel Fletcher and Lola Butler cut the anniversary cake at the Southern Cross Bowls Club 70th anniversary celebrations on Sunday.

Both won numerous championships down the years, including A-grade singles championships.

Asked about the club, they both agreed it is a "happy, friendly club”.

Fletcher has played for the club for 25 years after first playing bowls while based in Malaysia with the air force.

Butler joined 35 years ago and said she loved the teamwork involved in fours bowls.

"It is good to see a lot of new members in the club,” she said.

Club chairman Claire Hope rated the anniversary a great success.

"We had 80 at the anniversary and have our highest membership in the past 15 years,” she said.

A full green of 60 players lined up for two rounds of bowls.

The winning team comprised Southern Downs Bowls Club men's president Dave Scotney, Rob Francis and The Summit president Rob Parker.

Scotney answers some questions about the win in a self-selected team competition.

Have the three of you played together before: No, this was our first time together, I was the skip, Rob Francis was our lead and Rob Parker our third.

Who was the star: The two Robs played well in both our wins.

Was the winner determined on a countback: A number of teams had two wins but we were declared the winners overall with the highest winning margin in our two games.

What is it like to win on such a special day: I will always remember this win as it was our 70th anniversary day.

What was it like to see the men's patron in the runners-up team: It was good to see patron Noel Fletcher in the team along with John Woodrow, Pat Gainey and Judy Richardson from Tenterfield.

Who played on the day: Southern Cross invited the men's and women's president from each of the district clubs to play as part of our competition and help us celebrate our anniversary.

How did the green play: It played really well. Vince Hemmings and Raymond Lawson look after the green and everyone was happy with how it was playing.

Did rain on Saturday night slow the green down: The rain did slow the green down a bit but it was the same speed as always in the afternoon.
