Runner wins two doubles in NZ tour

WARWICK Little Athletics Centre member Jacob Lawrence won two 400m/800m doubles during an athletics development tour of New Zealand last month.

Lawrence ran close to personal bests in the Dunedin club meet and backed up with personal best times four days later in the South Island Provincial Championships.

The 15-year-old ran in U18s to win the 400m in 52 seconds.

He ran a personal best of two minutes for 800m and was delighted with his run in wet, cold weather.

"Part of the race was into a headwind," he said.

Before the trip, he competed for a Queensland junior team in the Brisbane Classics against relay teams from Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and Fiji.

He was third runner in the four by 400m event.

This weekend, Lawrence will compete in the little athletics regional championships in Toowoomba.

Tonight he is scheduled to be in the Darling Downs four by 400m U18 relay team which has been nominated for Sports Darling Downs Team of the Year at the annual awards at Rumours International.
