Milliner’s magic for all to see

HELEN Stumkat is not your typical TAFE student.

At 70 years old, she has again hit the books with a course in the art of millinery.

The spinner, weaver, dyer and felter decided to undergo the course in order to perfect the craft she has a clear passion for.

Over the next week, Warwick and its visitors will be able to see those talents up close.

Fabrics to charm will also be offered for sale.

Helen, who has family connections in the region, has travelled from her home at Flagstone Creek for the festival, as she does each year.

"I have been connected to Jumpers and Jazz in some ways since its conception; whether with a tree entry or teaching at the gallery or an exhibition," she said.

"Coming to the festival is my yearly 'something to look forward to' and I get to escape and stay for a while - it is the best event of the year.

"There are so many great events and it gives us small artists a chance to show the public - visiting and local - what we can produce."

The talented artist recently travelled to India for a trip with some of her fellow students.

She said the trip gave her an appreciation of the importance of producing our own clothing and other products here in Australia.

"It was amazing to visit the masters in their field," she said.

"I came home so enthusiastic and so willing to create and also promote what we do here."

Helen will be selling her hats, clothing and other products at her pop-up shop at 92 Grafton St each day during the Jumpers and Jazz festival.
