Mitchell Shield between Warwick and Stanthorpe
CRICKET: Former Brisbane A-grade cricketer Ross Lupton will be one of the trump cards in the Stanthorpe Mitchell Shield side for the clash with Warwick at Slade Park on Sunday.
Warwick will also host Stanthorpe in Davis Shield at Mayhew Oval.
Both games for Hendry/Bourke trophies start at 9am.
Lupton had a long career with Wests in the Brisbane A-grade competition.
Captain Ben Staley said Lupton would bat at No.4 and open the bowling.
"Ross will be one of our trump cards with his all-round skills and his experience from a long career in top-class cricket,” Staley said.
"We will be without Hayden Lanza who has a two-day game in Brisbane but his younger brother Jordan has been the best player all season in the Stanthorpe competition.”
Stanthorpe won the Mitchell Shield clash with Warwick last season on the way to winning the competition. Stanthorpe has now made the past two Mitchell Shield finals.
Staley has rated Chris Cantwell the best Warwick bowler in recent seasons but he won't be playing on Sunday.
"Jamie Saunders has scored runs against us down the years, he has a really good technique,” Staley said.
In round one, Warwick went down to Central Downs at Pittsworth in Mitchell Shield and lost to Toowoomba in Davis Shield.
The Breen Brothers, Jack and James, are set to return to representative cricket this weekend after being at a wedding in round one.
Opening batsman Brendan Malone missed round one and will add stability to the Warwick top order with his consistent form in club and representative cricket.
Warwick paceman Sam Waetford is out with a hamstring injury he sustained bowling his first over for Redbacks in club cricket on Saturday and Paul Cantwell has an injury. Leg spinner Shaun O'Leary is unavailable and Kev Poole is in the team.
Co-selector Dave Walker said the Mitchell Shield side was shaping up well.
"Batsman Carter Bilbrough has been scoring plenty of runs for Wheatvale,” he said.
In the Davis Shield, Stanthorpe didn't field a team in round one but according to Staley were good to go against Warwick for the game at Mayhew Oval on Sunday.
Walker will captain a Warwick team which impressed in round one before going down.
With the representative games on Sunday, Warwick clubs will play in a T20 competition this Saturday. The T20 round games will be played over three Saturdays.
