Mixed final cliffhanger

IT TOOK six and a half minutes for the golden point to be scored as Warwick won the A-grade mixed final at the Stanthorpe Affordable Sheds Queensland Polocrosse Club Championships at Bony Mountain yesterday.

The score was 16-all at full-time and at the end of an extra six minutes played by the women.

The men took the field for the second chukka of extra time and Colten Preston goaled for a 17-16 Warwick victory.

Warwick captain Charlie Brook said it was the first time anyone could recall a final going into a second period of extra time.

"It was nice to go that far and still win," he said.

Warwick beat Tambo in the round game earlier in the three-day carnival before the final became a cliffhanger.

The win was the 13th title win in A-grade mixed at state level for Warwick No.3 Sally McGrath.

McGrath was sensational all weekend, only conceding two goals in the mixed final and 11 for the weekend.

In the men's A-grade final, Tansey, which was the best team all season, capped it off with a 25-20 A-grade men's victory against Wandoan.

Warwick was eliminated from championship contention after a four-goal loss to Wandoan on Saturday.

In the A-grade junior final, host team Cunningham went down to Tansey.

Tambo and former Killarney player Jacob Ross won the award for best male player of the carnival. He works on a property at Tambo and played for Tambo 1 in the mixed competition.

Warwick player Stephanie Thorsby won the best female player award.

Jake Mantova, from Clifton, and Katie Barr, from the Warwick club, won champion Australian Stock Horse (ASH) awards.
