OPINION: Mobile phone confiscation proposal is a good call
WARWICK has backed a proposal by a branch of the LNP to punish motorists who use their mobile phones while driving.
The proposal will go to the LNP conference in Brisbane over the weekend and if it comes down to commonsense, it will win broad endorsement.
The Daily News conducted a random poll on the streets yesterday and the proposal was roundly praised.
Under the plan drivers would lose their phones and have them returned only after their fines had been paid.
Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg said he would hear the proposal and consider it. He said that no one should take lightly the consequences of mobile phone use while driving.
And one of our young respondents - we publish today only five of the people we spoke to - said "a few mates died because they were on the phone while driving".
The plan would allow offenders to keep their SIM card when the phone was taken. This probably is the plan's only flaw.
There are some among us who would admit to struggling without their mobile phone constantly at hand. And some have joked that they would simply die if their phones were taken from them.
The point is, you see, they could do just that unless their phones are removed.
