Teen burnt in backyard fire

A CANNING St teenager seen running from his residence with his shirt on fire was a ghastly image for neighbours Tuesday night.

One witness phoned 000 after seeing the 14-year-old boy alight, who is now recovering in Royal Children's Hospital after receiving severe burns.

A spokesman for the Warwick Police said they believed the teenager was one of two boys who started a fire in their backyard with model aeroplane fuel.

"It appears one of them put more fuel onto the fire when the other was standing near it, and because of the fluid's high flammability, it flared up," the spokesman said.

The boy who was burnt was not the one believed to have added fuel to the fire.

He received 40% burns to his body, including 20% partial burns to his thigh and 20% burns to his arms and torso.

He was rushed to Warwick Hospital about 8pm where he was stabilised.

He was later airlifted by RACQ CareFlight to Royal Children's Hospital about midnight.

Police are continuing their investigations into the exact cause of the accident.

A media spokesman for Royal Children's Hospital said the teenager was in a critical but stable condition and was still in intensive care.
