'Some human has shaved a roo's neck and set a dog on it'

A PLACID Hills woman has been left furious after finding a kangaroo with a shaved neck with bite marks on her property yesterday morning.

Terese Calleja was alerted to the kangaroo when her dog started barking.

"The kangaroo was just standing there and it looked pale and shocked," she said.

Mrs Callejacalled local wild life carer Kathy Filk, but the kangaroo died before she arrived.

Kangaroos are no stranger to Mrs Calleja's property but with rope restraint marks around the animals neck, Mrs Calleja said she was furious someone would harm the wild animal.

"Some human has actually shaved a kangaroos neck and set a dog on it," she said.

"They're mongrels, bloody mongrels.

"Someone in Placid Hills is catching them and using them to train their dogs on for when they go hunting."

Mrs Calleja and and Mrs Filk inspected the kangaroo and noticed evidence a joey had been removed from her pouch.

We have a lot of kangaroos and a lot of possums and they just run wild.

"They don't do any harm, the kangaroos don't knock down the fences, all they do is eat the dry dead grass."

Mrs Calleja reported the incident to the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, USQ and the RSPCA.

The dead kangaroo was taken to USQ for a report and investigation.

Wildlife carer Mrs Filk said using kangaroos for dog attack training was becoming more frequent.

"This is the second one that we've actually come across - where the kangaroo has actually escaped," she said.

"I imagine the roos would be killed and used as dog meat when they're done."

She urged landholders to be vigilant with wildlife.

"If you see someone with an enclosed Kangaroo, ask if they're a licenced carer," she said.
