Next big Qld gold mine could be in Rocky's backyard

QUEENSLAND'S next big underground gold mine could be in our very own backyard.

Minerals explorer Orion Gold yesterday announced the exciting discovery of a "substantial and highly prospective" gold and silver target 180km north-west of Rockhampton.

Managing director Errol Smart said the target, known as Aurora Flats, is an intermediate sulphidation system extending over 3.5km of their Connors Arc project.

"These systems tend to be very large and very high grade," he said.

"Very often they have very high silver content together with the gold."

Connors Arc forms part of a fold belt in Queensland which has delivered successful gold mines such as the Pajingo and Cracow.

While it is too early to place a dollar value on the discovery, Mr Smart said early indications suggested a deposit style known to host some "absolute monsters" around the world. Similar systems included Acupan in the Philippines and Pachuca in Mexico.

Former chief geologist for BHP Minerals Professor Noel White and his associate Bruce Wilson are heading the exploration team.

A geophysical survey will be conducted over the next two to three months to identify the best targets for initial drilling.

Mr Smart said if all goes to plan the first scout drilling could be completed before Christmas.

He said shallow drills of the area were conducted in the 1990s, but these only focused on discoveries close to the surface.

The target depth for this exploration was 200-300m and could be extended to as deep as 1000m.

Orion Gold has ongoing exploration programs in Western Australia and Victoria.
