CHAPLAINS across the Warwick district will begin the school year with good news of a funding continuation from the Federal Government.

A grant promised by the Gillard Government has guaranteed the continuation of the school chaplaincy program in the Warwick area.

"The continuation of government funding seems to be a clear recognition of the work that chaplains do with support and welfare services to families in the community," said Donna Angell, chaplain for Warwick East State School.

Once relying solely on churches and community groups, school chaplains were stretched to capacity, previously with just one operating in the region.

Warwick now has four dedicated chaplains in the region based at both east and west schools - the high school and Killarney.

"It is great that more of a focus can be put on the work at hand then money worries," said Ms Angell, who like many chaplains in the Darling Downs has provided a brekkie club and other welfare services with the help of both government and church funding.

The church and community groups providing extra funding to these services has always been a backbone of the Warwick region, according to a scripture union spokesman. "So it's good to see the extra money go directly to where it is needed," he said.

Continued support from the government could mean Warwick would receive some of the extra 100 chaplains anticipated to have placement in Queensland.

"There will be an emphasis on rural and remote areas," the spokesman said.
