More locals encouraged to become karate kids
KARATE: Local kids are being encouraged to take up karate with the Aussie Kids Karate Program.
The Webster family run the program, which has been adapted from the original art of Renbukan Karate.
Dave Webster said the program gives children the opportunity to learn elements of traditional martial arts.
"Self defence skills, strategies and personal safety concepts are also taught, as well as an introduction to martial arts weapons," he said.
"Games at times are also structured into each class with a martial arts bearing, as children learn better whilst having fun.
"Another adaptation is the use of merit based badges to denote achievement in some area of training, similar to the Scout movement - this is designed to give the children short term goals whilst working towards the long-term goal of gaining their black belt."
The Aussie Kids Karate training takes place in the Warwick West State School hall on Thursday from 5.30 to 6.30pm, the Allora State School Hall on Wednesday from 5.30 to 6.30pm and the FE Logan Hall on Tuesday from 5.30 to 6.30pm.
Webster said new students were most welcome to join the classes at any time during the year.
"Many benefits will occur through Aussie Kids Karate, such as respect, discipline, awareness, improving self confidence, coordination, concentration, flexibility and personal fitness," he said.
Classes are for children from four-years-old through to 12, with the first class free.
Adults will soon be able to take karate classes, with Annette Webster soon to training herself with an adult Renbukan class in Allora.
