More than 100 years of scouts in Stanthorpe
NOT many groups can claim to have been running for more than a century but that’s exactly what the scouts have done in Stanthorpe.
Group leader Quinton Stanley fell in love with scouts at the age of seven and he hasn’t looked back.
“I had behavioural issues at school and it gave me something other than school. I enjoyed the social interaction,” he said.
Now, almost 20 years later, Quinton is still going and he wants more people to get involved.
“We are after some new leaders. We’re always looking for new blood to reinvigorate,” Quinton said.
Scouts develop a range of skills, and most of their training comes with nationally recognised qualifications that are subsidised by their group.
Melissa Pascoe has been a leader for 20 years. “The beauty of scouts is it’s for the ages of six to 26. There’s something in there for all the age groups,” she said.
“It’s a lot of fun. They do camping, outdoor skills, people skills. It really sets kids up for their future.”
