Maryvale residents call for council to fix town cemetery

MORE than a hundred Maryvale residents have signed a petition calling on the Southern Downs Regional Council to make improvements to the town's cemetery.

The Maryvale Progress Association has identified seven key issues with the cemetery, which locals say the council has neglected.

The progress association is calling on the council to contribute an estimated $13,500 to improve the cemetery.

Under the plan the council is being asked to put in a park bench, plant 18 trees and replace a fence.

Cr Glyn Rees said the cemetery was an area that "lacked a lot of care".

"The park style seats they've been chasing for sometime," he said.

"There is a lot of work to be done in tidying that area up to the satisfactory standard of our cemeteries."

Councillors will consider allocating the funds or staging the requests for funds in next year's budget.

The cemetery is currently mowed six times and slashed three times a year by the council at a cost of $1700.

Members of the progress association have volunteered to assist the council maintain the cemetery.

The Maryvale Cemetery was established in 1914.

Fifteen people have been buried there in the past 16 years.
