Moreton club ready to soar at Morgan Park

AFTER more than a year at its new complex at Morgan Park, the Warwick Aero Modellers are hiring out their facility for the first time.

Club secretary Martin Shepherd said the Moreton Regional Sports Soaring Association would hold a two-day event at Morgan Park this weekend.

"The club from the Ipswich area doesn't have an airfield at present and are coming to Morgan Park,” Shepherd said.

"They will be launching gliders as well as model planes. Our club predominately has radio-controlled model planes.”

There will be three classes for this weekend's event, bungee launch models, radio-controlled sticks and radian type planes.

This weekend's event will be the biggest since the Warwick Aero Modellers established their own field and moved from their previous launch facility, the northern end of the drag strip at Morgan Park.

The Warwick Aero Modellers meet twice a month at a airfield that has been called Barclay Field.

Shepherd said the name reflected the work of Greg and Merry Barclay for the club.

"They are long-time members and volunteers in the club,” he said.

"Greg is at the airfield almost every day and is now the grounds' curator while Merry is largely responsibility for obtaining sponsorship for the club and helps with all aspects of the club's operation.

"Both are on the management committee and have been involved since the club was formed.

"The airfield will be officially opened and named Barclay Field at a ceremony on June 18 when Cr Neil Meiklejohn from Southern Downs Regional Council will officiate.”

The club is hoping to hear from prospective new members at any time.

Spectators to events at Morgan Park can be signed in as a bona fide visitor.

"Prospective new members are buddied with another pilot and then put on a simulator to get a feel for the sport,” he said.

The club has constructed a machinery shed at Morgan Park which is currently being used as a temporary clubhouse.

"We are applying for funds from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to build a clubhouse,” he said.

"Fundraising events include sausage sizzles at Bunnings and raffles.

"We made $400 at Bunnings last Saturday.”

The club has planted grass on an airstrip at Morgan Park which has a runway 200m long and 30m wide.

The Warwick Aero Modellers have 31 members from the Warwick and Stanthorpe areas.

The club also has events at the Stanthorpe Racecourse.

The first race this weekend will be at 11.30am Saturday.

Regular club events are fly days on the first and third Sundays of the month.

There is a barbecue on the first Sunday and members bring their own lunch on the third Sunday with action from 8am on both days.

The club facility is the first inside the gate at Morgan Park.
