Morning tea supporter in cancer battle of her own

THE past five years hosting the Biggest Morning Tea was to honour the memories of loved ones touched by cancer for Diane Lawler.

This year's event was more significant because she herself was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Over the past six months, Ms Lawler has had surgery to remove two tumours and undergone radiation treatment.

Staying positive she was not letting the disease get to her.

"I've had a good prognosis and looking forward to many more morning teas,” Ms Lawler said.

"I get a bit tired now and then but I'm getting better and stronger as the months go by.”

Only preparing for 50 guests, Ms Lawler had to scrounge around for more cups when 80 showed.

"It's a real community event, we couldn't have done it without the support of the businesses and the guests who brought food and pre-loved gifts to be auctioned off,” she said.

Along with tea and coffee donated by supermarkets, entertainment was provided for the day by local artist Diane Mead and Errol Waterson.

The event included a raffle offering 75 prizes donated by the community. It included various vouchers, a gift hamper valued at $150 and a water pump.

Many of those who attended, like Ms Lawler, had been affected by cancer in their life one way or another.

"A lot of the ladies have gone through this various times in their lives and it's great we can get together and support one another,” she said.

Ms Lawler is known for her garden figurines, and visitors enjoyed walking the garden grounds and checking out the ever growing gnome town which has reached 400 gnomes.

The final amount was still being calculated but Ms Lawler said the event had passed its $2000 goal and was just short of its new goal of $2500.
