The most important Australian tweets of 2014

IN its early days, talk of Twitter, tweets and re-tweets seemed bizarre and ridiculous.

Since its creation in 2006, the social media giant with its 140-character limit has become central to local, national and international conversation.

Twitter has today released the posts in Australia that struck a chord with readers, readers who then shared those tweets by re-tweeting them to their friends.

Everything from the World War One centenary, to some provocation from Iggy Azalea and of course, the national outpouring of grief after the shock death of young Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes.

Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer also featured twice in the top ten list following two very successfully awards evenings at the MTV EMAs and the VMAs.

Lorde tops the list, because apparently being a New Zealander isn't enough to stop us claiming her as our own.

The Golden Tweet of 2014 retweeted by Australians was Lorde's Tweet about a photo-shopped image of herself compared to the unaltered photo, telling the world not to hide its flaws. It was re-tweeted more than 70,000 times.

The impact of Phillip Hughes death was demonstrated in tweets about the tragedy making up one third of the most Retweeted list.
