Mostert's run sets Gold Coast alight

MOTORSPORT: Prodrive has bounced back from Bathurst 1000 despair to top the opening day of the Gold Coast 600.

Supercheap Auto Racing's Chaz Mostert recorded the fastest time of Friday in the opening session in a sign the team will be right in the hunt this weekend.

The 25-year-old clocked a time of 1:11.0597 to be just under a 10th of a second quicker than Nissan driver Michael Caruso and Red Bull Racing's Shane van Gisbergen.

In the other session for the day, Red Bull Racing set the pace, with Jamie Whincup's co-driver Paul Dumbrell fastest in 1:11.1445.

Monster Energy Racing and Prodrive's Richie Stanaway, partnering with Cameron Waters, was second.

The Supercars will be back on track on Saturday with qualifying at 11.20am, which will set the grid for the first 300km race at 2.25pm.
