Motorcyclist dies in horror smash

A MALE motorcycle rider has died after a horrifying accident on the New England Highway several kilometres north of Stanthorpe.

Initial reports from witnesses at the scene suggested the 54-year-old rider had been one of a pair travelling northbound and collided with the rear of the motorcycle in front before losing control shortly before 5pm today.

He sustained massive head injuries and is understood to have been rushed by ambulance to Stanthorpe Hospital but died a short time later.

The RACQ CareFlight rescue helicopter was dispatched to Stanthorpe after emergency services reached the scene, outside the McDonalds and service station outlet on the highway.

The northbound lane was blocked for several hours while emergency crews attended the scene. It is not known where the rider is from and investigations into the cause of the fatality are expected to continue tomorrow.
